I couldn't find any Quicksilver Gear Lube at the local auto part stores so I settled for NAPA Performance Premium Gear Lube. Have anyone ever used this stuff? Is it good/bad? My boat service manual doesn't says what the lube specs should be. It just says to use Quicksilver. The NAPA lube is 85w-90 and is rated GL-3, GL-4, GL-5.

Re: NAPA Gear Lube

No problem as long as you do not get any water in the lower unit. I can't remember when I last used a gear lube that was specifically labeled "Marine"! If you check your lower unit oil regularly for color you will be fine. I actually check mine very regularly because of the chance of fishing line behind the prop. Beleive it or not it's about every time I use the boat!

I pull the prop and check the oil!

Go to your newsstand or a Barnes and Noble and get the December 2008 issue of Bass and Walleye Boats magazine.

They did lower unit gear oil testing and came up with interesting results. It is worth reading.
