Navagational equipment back up Riviera compass question.

I have a Riviera Bulk head fitting compass which is my back up navagational system while at sea.I have noticed that the level of the fluid / liquid used as a dampener has dropped slightly and needs to be topped up, the liquid used is SHELLSOL,I have tried obtaining this fluid, which I think is a very light oil, locally but nobody has heard of this fluid,on closer inspection I got the impression that this might be something along the lines of brake fluid, or something along those lines .I wonder if any body can help me with what I should use to top up this compass, which is in good working order and only needs a top up of dampening fluid,Kind Regards William Wright.

Thanks for the reply, I took a sample of the fluid used to dampen the compass out through the filler hole, using a very clean ear dropper and had the fluid tested and it turned out to be a clean version of kerosene, I then contacted Shell South Africa and asked them what Shelsol was, ( the fluid used by the compass makers,) I was told that acording to them all that it was normal parrafin. I have since obtaining this information, topped up the compass to the hieght that I think is correct, leaving a very small bubble of air which cannot be seen once the compass is mounted in the controll panel, thanks for the help kind regards, WILLIAM WRIGHT,
