Aloha everyone, new guy here.

1968 Willard Sea Force 730 (Navy Seal Boat)
Volvo Penta TAMD41B with 290 DP outdrive

I am having noise from the frontside of the transom assembly where the jackshaft attaches. There is also a slight bit of lateral movement (1/32" or less) to the jackshaft. Is that normal?

Took the screw from the top of the transom assy and squirted as much oil as possible in there. It wouldn't take much before spilling over. Seems its more of a vent than a fill hole.

Never worked on a outdrive before but have rebuilt gas engines and worked on diesel engines. Not a novice to boating, just outdrives.

Am hoping to learn from this series of posts. Thanks for letting me know about hijacking threads.

Aloha, Dean.

Re: Navy Seal Boat

Howdy,

That's a nice eng/drive set up!

The first thing you need to do is get the correct complete OEM Volvo Penta service manual.

By "jackshaft" if you mean drive shaft , you need to fix it soon or you may have bigger problems later.

It sounds like it might be gimbal bearing noise etc.

Cheers,

Rick
