I am converting from I/O to outboard, looking for a 150 horse Johnnyrude, I am on a budget, looking to stay away from computerized, need to get educated on crossflow vs looper and vro or premix. What years and or models to look for? compression numbers to look for, etc....... please educate me, I own four smaller omc outboards, 7hp, 10hp and two 50's. time to go bigger on my new Islander project, Thanks for all help, Rick

Anything newer than a 1984 since that is when the "prop rating" went into effect for Johnson/Evinrude. The Pre '84 motors were "powerhead rated" and are under-powered compared to the newer ones.

The 60 degree loopers were very good engines. Just stay away from the FUCHT, I mean FICHT, version. The carb models are great.

The 150 crossflows started in 1978. Made up through the 1991 model year. They make a lot of torque in small lightweight package. About 400 lbs. 150 cubic inches. You need to be sure that the compression is solid for the powerhead. Check the oil in the lower unit for water. I'd want to hear it run prior to purchase. Make sure it has spark to all 6 cyls. Generally, these engines are considered older technology and burn a lot of fuel, so should be priced occordingly. The newer, 60 degree 150 loopers came out in the 91 model year. These carbed engines were also very torquey engines. They have had generally great reliability over time. They are somewhat newer technology: loop-charged, optical ignition, freshwater flush port, Quickstart, SLOW, and Fastrack trim system. You will pay more for the newer product. Either is a good choice. Buy the one that appears to offer the most. I always look for prior maintenance records from the current owner. That will tell you something.

So am I likely to find one of these in the 1000 to 2000$ range?

You are likely to find a good crossflow in this price range. The upper end of your price range is likely where the lower price range of the loopers start. Don't forget that you will need the control box, cables, and the remote oil tank.

keep an eye on Craigslist and Ebay, you find the 150's on there every so often in your price range.
