I have a small 4 hp Thunerbolt ll 2 cycle mercury outboard motor. It is need of repairs and I am having just an awful time finding out any information about it. The serial number is 716 2417 and it is Canadian made. Have friends with books but all there are american made and it seems to make a difference. I need to know the year, where I can get motor info for timing etc. Anything would be appreciated to help me get a little closer to finding the information that I need even if it is a lead to another source. Any help is much appreciated.

Your engine is a 1980 MERCURY 4 M.

To find your engine parts, You need to order Mercury part number 90686 It a MERC 4 H.P PARTS MANUAL for "your" engine.

Re: Need 4 Hp Mercury motor info Urgent!!!!!!!

Thankyou to both carholme and boatech for your prompt reply. It has been very helpful and moved my friend and I along to getting the motor going. If I could impose on you a little further, I am wondering if either of you can help with the following questions.
1. What mixture of fuel would this motor use? 50:1?

2. When I try to start it, it is hit and miss whether it engages to spin the motor. More miss actually. Have to take cowelling off to get it to engage. Looking at the parts and the parts manual, it appears as if everything is in place and not broke. Is there something I am missing or do either of you have any past experiences that will help me get it to engage more frequently.

3. Would operating and maintenance manuals still be in existence?

Once again, thank you both very much.

Re: Need 4 Hp Mercury motor info Urgent!!!!!!!

Just another question which I forgot to add with other reply. This motor does not seem to have a reverse but it will spin all the way around. Is that the proper way to operate it go in backwords?

Also, when you shift to forward it seems to have two stop positions that it will snap into. Do not see a difference but so far only running in a barrel of water. Any additional info would be much appreciated.
