Need a Boat Cover

I'm looking for a cover for my pontoon. Right now by boat spends it's life under a carport, so it's out of the elements. Problem is that the neighborhood cat likes to sometimes prowl through the boat. Now I know a cover won't completely take care of this issue, but I think it would deter it, and there may be a time when the boat has to sit outside. Looking for opinions on what to get and if you have any links that would help as well. Thanks.

A tight fitting cover helps , and I have heard mothballs will also slow them down its a common problem im told

A local canvas guy can make a snap down o for you. Sumbrella is the best material to use. Ensure it has vents to prevent moisture buildup and mould. There are several places online as well. Mine was made by Dowco.

I don't need anything too fancy, just looking for one for an 18 foot boat. You have a link to the site?

Sadly, in my experience with boat covers there's fancy and there's the kind that must be replaced every couple of years. That said, I used a semi-custom cover on my previous barge. Think it was a hundred bucks or so and I went ahead and got a support system for it, which is a necessity. It was a huge pain to put on and remove but it did a decent job of protecting the boat when I could psyche myself up to use it. I do think a cover would help deter the feline visitors, but I can't say for sure. I have the kind Ray's referring to and they'd have to really want to board the boat to get past it. Here's the cover http://www.pontoonstuff.com/storage-pontoon-boat-covers.aspx and here's the support system I used http://www.***************.com/p/NAT-55745/Pontoon+Cover+Support+System.html on our previous boat.

That second link isn't working for me, but the first cover looks like something I'm wanting. Could I just make a support system out of 2x4's? I'm thinking I could make a couple of stands one for the back (taller) and one for the front and then just throw the cover over. Sounds simple, but would that get the job done?

Iboats store has covers for voyager boats. Did you check them out?

I gave it a quick try, but didn't find what I need, maybe I'll look again.

Sorry about that. Try this one. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/taylor-made-pontoon-boat-cover-support-system.aspx?a=480100 It actually worked pretty well for me, but I'm sure you could probably throw something together. If you're able to install grommets you could add three holes and use poles.

Yeah after seeing that it gives me an idea. I'm fairly crafty so I think I can come up with something I just would like to have the cover. I think the one you sent me is about what I'm wanting to spend so I may pick one up if I can't find something better.

Re: Need a Boat Cover

Well after some time of trying a few boat covers that were non custom made and taking them back I'm back to the drawing board. I ended up finding a shop that makes covers down the road so I gave them a call. They said they make all of their covers out of Aqualon. I did some reading and it sounds to be good material. My biggest concern is how this cover, or any cover with good fabric holds up to hail. Living in Oklahoma we see hail a few times a year, and granted it is normally something that isn't that big of a deal, we do occassionally get golf ball size hail and I'd hate for it to be ripped to shreds. Can anyone testify how this would hold up? I know it's not going to hold up to large hail, but honestly not much is going to hold up to that big hail, even a solid roof.

I am not sure if ANYTHING would be able to hold up to golf ball sized hail?

Yeah maybe golf ball size is going to destroy a lot. I guess about an inch is more like what we have sometimes once or twice a year.

Re: Need a Boat Cover

I've thought about getting one of the semi-custom covers that iBoats has for sale. I was curious if anyone with a Voyager has ever purchased one and how it fit? My biggest issues with covers has been the height towards the rear of the boat due to the helm height and bimini top.

Re: Need a Boat Cover

IMHO, screw those canvas covers. They're expensive, short lived, a PIA to put on and a PIA if you have to get into the boat for whatever reason. Plus they don't protect it well, letting in rains and the playpen/platforms are uncovered letting in water and soaking things. F-that. Water rins down your railings, onto the floor and right onto the carpet, even into the boat.

I made my own system which is way better, EASY to put up, EASY to get into/walk under and it covers everything, stem to stern, all platforms and motor, and even the playpen railings down to midtoon. no water gets in at all, not even under the railings or from the platforms and the railings aren't getting sunbleached.

I took 1.5 inch PVC pipe and made three stands, square base w/three legged uprights each ( two short ones bolted thru the longer one at mid-ish point ) just slightly over 6 ft tall. I can easily lift the cover by the motor and walk under it.

The longer legs have "t " tops into which I insert more PVC pipe for ridge poles. Over it I place a heavy duty tarp, bungee that down and it's all good to go, tight, rain and wind proof. We flip " roll " it in from both ends towards the middle then toss it overboard to remove it. It goes up really easy, esp compared to canvas covers.

It works friggin awesome ! Plus it is so friggin easy to get into it's ridiculous. Unbungee a cord by the motor and climb right in and walk about standing up!, Yep standing up. Full easy access to the whole boat.

On the sunnyside, I place fat pool noodles between the tarp and seat tops to keep the tarp off of the cushions (my boat has fat overstuffed cushions) I do this to keep the sun from making them hot. If you've ever felt your cushions on a sunny day(and your cover is against them) they will be H O T. I didn't say warm, I said hot, which bakes them, aging them prematurely.

Including the tarp, I have around $200 dollars in it. It protects way better than the canvas covers and this winter the snow will slide right off.

I wouldn't even be surprised if it would keep that cat off that the OP was having trouble with.

I think it would easily shed most hail, given it's steep angle and thick tarp. If the hail did damage the tarp, it's only $80 for a new vs $1000 or so for a custom canvas. I would just buy two tarps to have one on hand in the event you needed it.

I have a heavy duty tarp, I've just never been able to make it look good enough to openly store it in my back yard.

Re: Need a Boat Cover

Heavy duty tarps or canvas are simply too heavy to deal with.

My Bennington came with an OEM mooring cover made out of Surlast fabric. That's a budget Far East polyester fabric kin to Sunbrella. I've read of 4 year old boaters inquiring about the cost of another factory cover only to be told they're $1,500. Someone found one online for $1,100. These covers fit so tight that it takes a very strong person to snap all the snaps.

It'd be cheaper to buy one of those inexpensive aluminum car ports they sell online--14' x 30' with 8' sidewalls run $1,570 installed.

Those carports around here are $600. Problem is homeowners won't let me have one.

Re: Need a Boat Cover

If you can't find an exact fit cover for your boat in the iboats store, check out Tumacs Index

They have patterns for thousands of boats so you will basically be buying an exact fit...not a semi-custom. And you will save hundreds over a custom fit (and get it faster).

I went with their recommendation and had mine made in a material called Aqualon. Unlike Sunbrella and other canvas type materials, Aqualon is waterPROOF. And it's much less bulky. They added vents, supplied poles. It fits perfect and is well made. I have had dock neighbors ask me about it.

I tried using a storage cover and my own homemade support structure for the first year. Went on easy enough but it looked terrible and was still a pain when big winds came. And it frankly allowed water in everywhere because the material is water resistant. Pfft.

The best thing to do is have one made.
