Need a cheap tachometer.....

I have a 1974 Johnson 50 and I need a way to measure rpm for prop selection and idle adjustment, ect. What is the cheapest way to do this?.....I don't need anything permanently mounted...

Ebay has some small tachs listed for tempory use you can use for testing. otherwise you will have to invest in a new tach and wire it in to work.

There are a couple of options. Look around for a good deal on a Tiny Tach. Or if you have a good multi-meter with a frequency counter you can tie that into the tach lead.

There is an online outfit selling no-name brand tachs for $20 plus shipping. Google "outboard tachometer" and I am sure you will find it.. Otherwise, tinytach is a good option, or you can even get adventurous and use an optical tach. I have one of those to verify my instrument function.

Yup, I bought a brand new, old stock, no box, Faria Tach for $22. It matched my old gauges but shinier.

Look on craigslist for a dwell meter. I needed a timing light and dwell meter to set up my mercruiser I/O. I got both for $10 from someone who hasn't needed then since they stopped making cars with carbs 25 years ago.

Oh, I almost forgot the important point. The dwell meter also works as a tachometer.
