Need a kit to properly deliver gear oil?

Loosened the bottom screw on my 1958 Thunderbolt 40hp. Got about a tablespoon of pure water before oil started seeping out. Time to replace the oil!

How much time normally elapses before significant water forms in the gear box? This motor has not been used since 2005 by the way. Last started seven years ago.

So I ordered a new water pump impeller.

Is there a simple way to properly fill gear boxes without the kit? With ten outboards, six that need medical attention, figuring I should just buy a gear oil insertion kit.

EDIT: With ten outboards, a kit that worked on both Johnson/Evinrude and Mercury/Mariner would be nice. Have a Yamaha too.

I don't know what is wrong with these motors. Hoping to salvage several. Figure that water pump impeller and gear oil is almost automatic.

Water gets into a lower unit by leaking past the seals when being used. Check the grease after running for 1/2 hour; if water is present or you see oil leaking around the propshaft then it's time to reseal. In that Mark 55 I would replace all the seals.

All the seals? You mean the lower unit seals? This old boat is going to cost plenty to repair. Then be worth....not a whole lot. We do it because we can!

On the other hand, having 40hp in this compact package would be pretty cool! How many 40hp's can one hand carry?

People just love saying that. I've had a boat for 19 years. Now I have three.

What hobby is not a money hole?

Stormy day with 30mph gusts has brought out the gremlin in me. Buying non-working outboards for ultra cheap and making them work while changing the impeller and gear fluid? Based on asking prices of outboards, seems that one could make a few dollars.

There are a few guys on this forum who bought "working" motors and they have to go thru them completely with our help to make them run. An old motor needs to be restored beyond gear lube and impeller change. There are seals on the crankshaft, propshaft, driveshaft, shiftshaft (they aren't expensive but the time is) also bearings and points.
