My 1990 Merc 3.0 stopped reading 14v now reads between 10-12 on gauge, cleaned and inspected every connection on motor and dash, battery is new and reads 12.35 on the volt meter, also with the motor running i pulled off the + battery cable and it stayed running so the alternator must be doing something.

I pulled the the alternator to inspect and everything looks good, what should i do next?

What is this small selector for? 1st pic

Is this round thing mounted to the back of the alternator a capacitor? 2nd pic

Any help would be great thanks!

Re: Need a little help. see pics

first pic is the voltage reg that may have an adjustable output setting
second is a cap .Standard output is about 14.5 read with a meter at the output lug
and at the battery
NEVER REMOVE A BATERY CABLE FROM AN ENGINE WITH AN ALTERNATOR
The surge can/will blow every thing electronic, including bulbs and electronic ign systems
