1979 115 Johnson - Thought I had everything wired right but when I got to the lake something was short to ground as the motor would not start. Took off the accessory wiring from the battery and the motor started right up.

Here's where I think the problem may be. Going to the tach is 2 wires and one of them splits off and loops to each of the instruments. The wire is blue and lights up the panel instruments. When I was wiring the panel I had to bring in a positive to the light switch to get the running lights up. Is this the way to bring power to the lights?

Re: Need a little wiring help

The running lights and lights for the gauges are usually pulled of your accessory wiring which is separate from the engine harness and is wired to the battery on separate wiring.

If there is too much load for the accessories, it could keep you from having enough power for starting. More likely is that your battery cables are bad, or that your ground wires are not clean.

You might want to look at silvertip's generic accessory wiring diagram for some ideas: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=186986
