#1)after a rebore and when honing, is there a recomended crosshatch pattern or RMS finish?
#2)Also, I planned on skinning the "deck" (surface head bolts to) just enough to get a clean up to guarentee a clean, flat, true surface. Probably no more than .020, is there a problem with this?
#3) last one! Any good recomendations for cleaning prior to machining? Would a hot-tank be a no-no for the aluminum block?

~I have built many an automotive engine, and am a journeyman machinist, but have the jitters about screwing up "my twins"!!! I'll either be doing all the machine work myself or very closely supervising it!

The twins are 1959 Evinrude "Golden Jubilee" 35hp Larks. (Model 35517)(TWO sequentially serial numbered specimen's) :p

Everything is sitting here ready to go, (NOS pistons, rings, rods) But want to make sure its done right the fist time!!!!
HELP!!

HELP & THANKS!!!!

Hi 2qwk
Get a hold of that ken cook co. and get an OEM manual or an after market manual for that mater. For a person with your talents and acsess to machines, this ought to be a walk in the park.

Thanks alcan for the sugestion and your faith in this being a walk in the park! I actually have The fifth editon Factory Service manual as well as the seloc manual. Which is why I was trolling the web, Neither manual has the answers I need. Was hoping to find someone with direct (hands on) knowledge to question.....With all the outboards out there that get rebuilt, there has to be someone "out there"

I usually hone to get a noticeable cross pattern. You also want to get any scratches out. As for skinning the deck I would not recommend that. you may end up with not enough piston to head clearance causing the piston to slap the head.

And you definately do not want to hot tank the aluminum block......

Hi 4u442:
This might help you out. All you need to do is get your machinist bible out. ( the machinist handbook) whichever Edition you got and look up honing. It'll explain everything you need to know from the crosshatch to how much material needs to be left after boring to the feeds and speeds and what stones to use for certian materials as far as removal and finishes in micro-inches (R.M.S.). Get use to this book because it'll come in handy over the years if your a toolroom machinist. Mines the 22nd edition pages 2047-2050. Believe me after you use it a while you'll know why they call it the machinist bible. Good luck!!

Thanks 'One Last Cast', Stupid me never even thought about the Bible! Thing is I do use it all the time~ Just never thought about looking there. Mines the 24th Editon, and it does shed some light on the subject. I know the newer editons condensed some subjects somewhat which makes me think this perhaps is the case with this subject, as it still dosent quite hit all I expected after your insightfull post!! I'm going to dig up Dads 16th editon and see what it says....Thanks !!!

nope on toolroom machinist~actually I dont make any chips anymore. Yep~ just "overhead" now......
