Our old unit bit the dust a couple days ago. Been having a lot of problem with the unit this summer so I tired of messing with it and will just get a new unit. Our old unit is a R-22, I can get another R-22 unit for now but with the newer R-410A refrigerant should I just go with the newer R-410A or stick with the R-22 ? I have read of people upgrading to the newer R-410A units and their older A-coils start to leak because of the higher pressure 410A uses. The guy we use for our AC and heating problems is suggesting a Goodman unit. After reading Goodman reviews I will stay as far away from them as I can because they are nothing but junk. Trane units have the best review but they cost a bit more. What other brands do you folks suggest and why ?

FYI: we need a 5 ton unit because or home is 2430 square feet. ( 600 square feet per ton is what I was told )

Thanks
Randy

I have had a 5 ton goodman for over 10 years. Had 2 relay problems. I think it was about 100 each. My house is 2970 sq feet. Very poor ducts and insulation. I plan on getting a 4 ton when this one goes bad. ( same brand) Not sure a 5 ton will run long enought to dry out a house.

Nothing wrong with Goodman, don't let the reviews scare you. The reason for the bad reviews are because Goodman will sell to anyone......if the INSTALLER is not professional chances are you will be dissatisfied. There are reputable dealer that do sell and install Goodman units and Goodman does warranty their equipment for 10 years BUT only if it is a licensed and reputable installer. The Goodman uses the same copeland scroll compressors, motors and electronics that most of the major brands use. Brand means little these days HVAC units are like computers....just a bunch of generic parts in a different box. You can buy a Goodman online and install it yourself or arrange to get it installed but it will be a crapshoot because you won't have a warranty. I have a 7 year old Goodman heatpump that has been trouble free and still has 3 years of non-pro-rated warranty left. Just an after thought, No matter what brand you decide on it WILL be built of mostly Chinese components.

Re: Need a new home central air conditioner

Before you decide on a unit using R-410a, Dupont has come out with a drop in replacement for R-22. I just got an email the other day on the replacement. I can't remember off hand what it is called. I'm sure someone of the other HVAC techs will chime in on this post as well.

The main heart of a unit is the compressor. Myself, I stay away from any unit having Bristol compressors. I prefer Copeland schroll's over any hermetic compressor.

As for brands,,,,I look for who has the availability of service and parts. Nothing worse than have to have an OEM part that cannot be interchanged with a generic part when you need it most.

with the newer higher efficient units all are 410 refrigerant, and all manufacters require you to replace the indoor coil as well or they will void all warranty. indoor coil must be manufactered the same year as the outdoor unit.

Isceon m099 might be the ticket for an old r22 unit that is OUT warranty.... but right now none of the HVAC manufactures will honor their warranty if you use Isceon m099. If you need to replace your unit anyway why not buy a R410 unit? Personally, I would prefer the R22 over 410 because it is quieter but regulations force us to change.

as far as i know of if you change the condencer to 410a yopu have to change the coil to get all the warenty and it to work properly, i would go with a gibson or ruud if you can find one and stick with r22 , if not pick a brand and go to 410a better efficiancy and what not

We had a Very High efficient Goodman installed in 2010 & so far it is GREAT!!! Now because of the bad press we purchased Bumper to bumper 10yr warranty. Also it has saved quite a few $$$$$s since installed & we also used it to get the Tax Credits.

Our AC guy just left. He called the factory on our heater and found out it's a 4 ton system and we will be going with a Goodman 410A, with new outside unit and a new A-coil plus new lines for just under $4,000.00. Comes with a 10 year warranty and tax credit.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Sounds like a pretty good deal Randy. I bought an R22 5 ton Goodman about three years ago. The tech said my original coils may not be the very most efficient but they were cleaner than a whistle. So we we reused them. I paid about $2600 installed. I haven't had any issues and the compressor comes with a 10 year warrantee.
