Need A New Winch

So the winch on my trailer is so rusted, its only a matter of time before the gear teeth just snap right off. So I need a new winch. This site has a million of them. There's just one problem, I have no idea how much my boat weighs. Any guess would be a complete shot in the dark.

Got any insight for me? is 1000lb rating enough? Overkill? Not enough?

A 1,000#-rated winch should be fine. You're just pulling the boat onto the trailer, not lifting it.

True but it's also the main 'holder' of the boat on the trailer, so when the boat is full winched up and I'm ready to drive away, that must put a lot of extra load on it too i would imagine.

That is the reason for the safety chain from the bow eye to the trailer frame.

Right right. I'm just saying, I don't actually plan on "needing" the chain. But do you all agree that 1000# is good? Not that I don't believe NYBo, I'm just looking for a consensus :-D

What do you mean you don't plan on "needing the chain". It is called a safety chain for a reason. Just like the safety chains that tie the trailer to the tow vehicle. They are safety chains. Just like the tie downs at the back of the boat. You do have those don't you?. The winch strap for your rig goes UNDER the bow stop does it not? This is all about safety. You could have a 5000# winch and in an accident the boat would still come free as the bow eye could not stand the strain. A 1000# or 1500# winch is just fine. As was pointed out, you are not lifting the boat.

I think he means he is hoping it never comes down to the safety chain saving his bacon, not that he doesn't plan on having one.

At least I hope that's what he means!

Yes that is (IMO obviously) what I meant. So this is the one I picked out. Few extra pounds of capacity for safety sake, strap included so it's all bolt on and ready to go, and the price seems good too.

Ack bad link. The site is putting session IDs in the url instead of cookies...

Good choice. I like the ergonomic handle.
