Hello
This might sound like a dumb question but I was wondering how a stero runs on a boat? Do I have to have a charger for the battery? Or is there an alernator working with the battery that charges the battery? I was thinking of putting one in on a 1983 Lund Mr Pike that I'm getting for a gift from my grandfather.
Thanks

No such thing as a dumb question as far as I'm concerned.
Sounds like you want to put a stereo in your new boat?
I bet you can do that.

A stereo runs in a boat pretty much the same way it runs in a car. Most will run on 12 volts.

You will want a charger for your new boat, but not to power up a stereo. You will need it to keep the battery (batteries) charged when you are off the water.

If your new boat has an engine and gauges or lights, it will have an alternator to keep the battery (batteries) charged while you are on the water.

Congratulations on your new boat. Once you have it, check it out and see where you might put that stereo and a couple speakers. If you have more specific questions, try to give us more details and maybe a picture or two.

Regards,
Greg

one big difference, with an outboard you either get a stator (very little extra power), or a very small alternator. (boats with inboard engines have car sized alternators, no worries there...) Anyway, If you put in a big multi amp/sub system, it is very likely you can draw the battery down even with a running engine.
