need a title

I have a 14' sears fiberglass semi V bottom. Bought it for 50 bucks from some farmer, but he did'nt have a title. I don't know how to get the title for it. The boat does'nt have a HIN on it. All I have is the model numbers from sears. The boat is pretty old so I don't know if the boat was made before 73 when you did'nt need the HIN. I have look at the Virginia game and fishing website but does'nt seem to help any. Any advise would be great

How badly do you want to title/keep this boat? I purchased a 1961 Larson 14' boat out of state and received a bill of sale only. To register the boat, I had to have a title. I could not get the title because the original owner was unknown, and the boat was so old that it wasn't on the books in the state it was purchased from.

Here is what I did. I found a service on the internet that provides titles for a fee. You sell your boat to them, they register it in a registration only state, and then they sell it back to you after it's registered and provide you the registration, bill of sale, and a note stating the state where it's registered is a registration only state so they have no title. You take this info to the DMV, Parks, or whoever does boat registrations in your state and get it transferred to you. You will pay anywhere from $100-$200 for these services. It was a little nerve racking to sell my boat to them, but I received all the paperwork back in just over one week and registered/titled my boat with no problems.

I'm not sure how you're going to do this w/o a hull number or serial number though? Is it possible you've overlooked the number?

if this was my project, i would first contact whom ever handles ur state's boat registration. it may be as simple as getting a letter from the farmer saying he bought the boat for personal use on his property in his cattle tanks. (ponds) this is a possible avenue for texas boats per the Tx Parks and Wildlife Dept that handles our boat registrations.

I agree with Lakester, before you do anything find out what you have to do, then your not spending alot of time or money on something that isn't needed.
Start with your BMV, they should at least get you going on the right direction.

I appreciate everyones quick response, I think I might cut my losses and let this boat go. I already have another boat here thats good to go. Thanks for the feedback and hopefully I can help you all out in the future.
