Hello everyone,

I ordered a new 40hp Evinrude Etec Tiller model for my boat a little over 3 weeks ago. When I ordered it the dealer said it would be right about a week before it would come in. A few days after the dealer called me and said that Evinrude was in the middle of re-tooling there lines for the 2008 models and it would be 3 weeks before it would come but that it would be a 2008 model. I said fine at the time but now today the dealer called Evinrude and they said atleast another 10 days.

Now, Im in wisconsin and if my motor doesnt come for another 10 days that puts me at October 1st almost before I could probably get it out on the lake. And there is maybe only another month and a half of very chilly fishing weather after that. Ive been debating on canceling the order now and waiting till the winter when they hopefully have one of those 7 year Extended warrenty promotions like I think they have had the last few years.

Do you guys think I should just wait till the winter and maybe get a better deal on the warrenty or get it when it comes in. The dealer said they would refund my deposit at any time because the wait has been so long and they werent warned in advance.

Thanks for any advice,

Mike

I would expect an 08 price increase. You might nose around see if anyone smells an increase or if the competion is raising prices.
Maybe take your deposit and put it in an ING account. At least you'll have more money in the spring.

Yeah there was a $100 increase for the 40hp for 08 which was figured into my price. The sales person was using the 2008 book for the prices but no one told them there was going to be such a delay in the 08's being available. They figured it was just going to be the normal 1 week lead time if they dont have it in stock....

Im really leaning towards holding off till the winter now a 7 year warrenty if they have the promo again is quite longer then the standard 3 year.

$100 is nothing compared to a 7 year warranty. I would be asking what exactly changed that they need to retool the lines for.

This is a sticky wicket! I went through the same situation in summer of '04. I ordered a 60 hp in june and was told it would be delivered in 1 or 2 weeks. This dragged on into spring of '05 and in March BRP offered a 7 year "buy in warrantee" at $4 per horse. The 60hp was still not available so I bought the 50hp. In the end the dealer gave me the same price as the year before.
btw, if I had it to do over I would in a heartbeat, the motor has been fantastic.
Good luck!

They said that the only thing that changed on the 40-60hp is the tiller handle and that the factory is going to be installing the tiller handle now instead of the dealers.

I would wait for the extended warranty promotion. You will get limited use out of it this year and the warranty will be ticking away while it sits. Pre-Spring is a good time to buy...

Does anyone have any information on whether or not the 7 year warrantee program is or will be running this winter?

I think as long as you can survive 45 days w/o a new motor, I would wait for the extended warranty. That way you will have fuzzy warm feeling for 3 more years.

Someone told me that Bombardier sold Evinrude and Johnson to another firm who is redesigning it and doesn't intend to honor any existing warranties or to offer parts for any models made before they took over. Anybody correct me on this or verify it? It may be why there is a delay right now.

Looks like they downgraded the promo to a total of 5 year warranty!

This should squash the buyout rumor. I wonder how much it would cost to purchase a 4 year extended warrantee and take the $500.00 credit?
