Either one works, the tube allows exhaust to exit easier but allows more exhaust noise to be heard on plane. Exhaust boot restricts exhaust more and makes exhaust noise more quite. That said, unless you have a High performance small block and a big block engine, you will not notice any performance issues

Wait just one minute, you mean he gets paid for this gig?....:D

Just so you're aware of all the info available about using the tube. While yes the exhaust tube will fit and says it will fit on the Alpha Gen 2 drives, Merc factory hasn't really installed the tube on the Alpha Gen 2's. For example, Inside Merc's 2010 Quicksilver Product Catalog - Marine Parts Express Under the user notes (1) They say to only use the Exhaust tube for higher HP applications which is listed under certain models on page 1124/25. Plus you won't find the tube in a bellow kit for the Gen 2's, http://www.michiganmotorz.com/marine-parts-accessories-transom-parts-c-32_85.html

Exhaust Tubes for Big Block Applications,
http://www.sterndrives.com/merc/driveparts/exhaustbellows.html

More Carbon Deposits on the back of the boat,
http://www.mercstuff.com/exhaustbellows.htm

All that mentioned above, many forum members have installed the tube successfully on the Gen 2's.:)

What engine model do you have?
