I am looking at a 1985 Johnson 140 model J140TLCO. Is this a good engine or does anyone know about any problems?

Thanks,
Cliff

A torque monster. The 1985's came with a V6 style gearcase so you can use a large diameter prop.

A darn good motor in my opinion.

Is the engine currently on a boat? I would ask if you could take it out for a ride. I was lucky enough to do that when I purchased my outboard. I felt more comfortable taking it out for a long ride before making the purchase.

:)

The motor is not on a boat but he says we can run it with muffs. He also doesn't have a compression check but says that i can get a mechanic to test it or I'll take my gauge with me. The thing is it's a really good price and I was looking at a new powerhead for my 150 Evinrude. This would be a lot cheaper and I could part my rude out.

That's exactly the one and I just bought it. Any thoughts from the pics/description.

Also can anyone recommend how much to check on this engine? If compression is OK and it runs smooth should I just put a water pump on and go? Or should I fork out for a set of head gaskets and take a look at the cylinders?
