I am about to begin to complete my project on my 78 glastron. I need some advice. After removing the old play I had to sand to remove all the old filler. Now I have decided to use either "Gluvit" or "GelMagic" to bond the ply to hull. Can I use a filler in either to replace the area I sanded away. Its about a 1/4" that was removed. see pics

I would not advise you to use either. I would recommend either Thickened polyester resin and mat or thickened Epoxy resin.

at the very minimum PL adhesive or 3m 5200. but a thickened resin either epoxy or poly would be best. u can do this by adding cabosil/silica/or even chopped glass.

Polyester resin and 1.5 oz CSM is the only way to go and the least expensive.

Finally I found a transom that looks similar to mine. After cutting and ensuring fit how are you going to hold/clamp the new wood to the transom?

I have read of the PL and 5200, epoxy is better than both right? Newbie questions I know.

Hello wallybme..

For your question about filling what you sanded away... are you talking about the lower transom edge at the hull ( kinda hard to tell from the pics ). If so..I would use mat and poly.

As far as the trans bond..as allready stated your two choices are not advisable.

If you use a poly base resin you better have all your ducks in a row. Once you kick it you better MOVE Fast ! ;) .

There are many good threads about trans bonding/clamping/materials etc. here on Iboats. I recommend you read up a bit first.

Have a plan..reherse it a few times before you just goto town :) .

The entire transom had some sort of filler between the skin and the ply, and so I got some advise tha since there were cracks all over then I should sand it to the fiber galss. That's what is in the second image.

"Gluvit" or "GelMagic' was recommended on

In the case of plywood, it will be made of several layers epoxy glued. You make epoxy glue from epoxy mixed with a filler, in this case wood flour (woodflour). Better yet, use premixed epoxy glue (Gelmagic).

Aren,t "Gluvit" or "GelMagic" epoxy glues and what about the 3M Marine High Strength Repair Filler? I am scared to use the combination of the epoxy and wood flour because of the rapid setting time. Lt leaves a very short window for errors.

Can anyone advise on how to increase or prolong the setting time? I am using the West 105 epoxy.
