Hi Guys:

Some of you may have seen my thread in the Resto section, about putting a GM 6.2 diesel V8 in a Luhrs 28. Here's my question: I can think of 2 ways to install the engine/tranny/V-drive and I'm wondering which is best.

A) Bolt the tranny/V-drive up to the engine on the wood pallet and drop it in the boat all at once.

or:

B) First install and align the trans/V-drive, attach prop coupling etc., then install engine and bolt up bellhousing.

My thoughts are that method "B" is going to give me more access for aligning the V-drive to the prop coupling, but I'm worried then what if it's a real b*stard to get the engine aligned to the bellhousing and bolted up?

Method "A" is going to require me to lie on top of all sorts of real uncomfortable objects in the bilge to bolt the V-drive up to the prop coupling.

So if you were doing it which way would you go?

Thanks!

Bert

B) First install and align the trans/V-drive, attach prop coupling etc., then install engine and bolt up bellhousing.

The method above will not work, you must have the engine on the V-drive, as a couple of the mounts are on the engine, there is no way to align just the tranny.

You have to mount the engine and transmission as an assembly, and to answer you next question, YES, they are a PITA to get to for alignment. But it has to be done.

Thanks guys. Believe it or not I hadn't thought of that. I'm glad I bounced the idea off you.
