Need advice

my bass boat has a 175hp johnson motor I was running down the lake and I lost all power so I jumped it off with my trolling motor batteries and ran I got up speed and it felt like it was missing or something like a little jerk I got where I was going and ready to go after fishing awhile and I couldn't get it to stay started could this be a battery or electrical problem I've took it to a marina and they said everything was fine I'm new to this and need some advice or maybe a fixer from you guys

did the motor die suddenly (electrical) or gradual (fuel)?

batteries are only for starting/accessories. the motor can run by itself.

what model number?

It died suddenly on me when running.The model#J175GLEUC the year of the motor is a "96" I've had someone tell me it may be the carbs or fuel. Being I spent $250 on a so called technician to check it out I'm beat up bout it, but when I was trying to get it back started,I had too try and jump it off cause my battery would run down and it would gradually die

Thats $250 would have been better spent on basic tools and the service manual.

You need a compression guage, spark GAP tester and a timing light is handy.
Buy the whole lot, including the factory service manual for $100.

Did the repair shop write down any compression numbers on the receipt?

If it passes compression (approx 90spi and even) and passes the spark GAP test (7/16th inch gap) then its very likely fuel delivery.

Change the filter between the carbs (cone shape) and rebuild the carbs with new kits, very simple when you have the manual.
You can do all this in 3 hrs, its very simple.

I don't believe they done a compression test.He told me they ran the boat and it ran fine they checked all plugs and wiring and they looked good .I'm new to this and I tried to get info from a few of my buddies but none was to helpful,but THANKS and I'll get at it and let you know how it went.THANKS AGAIN

I pulled the battery out and it's a deep cycle battery could this be an issue with why the boat wouldn't stay started

well...

It "could be" anything.

Get the manual and the tools, do the tests we outlined for you and report the results, we can help if you help.

Our approach isn't to throw parts at "could be".

Autozone will tell you if that battery will hold a charge and deliver the cranking amps...for free.

Buy some tools whilst you're there too.

Not an expert on the loopers, but I thought that these model years required a battery for the ignition to work properly during normal running operation-unlike the old crossflows which used it for starting only. If you have a dead cel in the battery or low voltage, it may affect the ignition.

Lets make this easy. Take the battery down to your local battery supplier. They can fully charge and load test and let you know if it is still good.

Deep cycle battery is made to discharge at a lower rate and provide power longer. Good for trolling/running accessories. Most work fine for starting as well and many are labeled as dual purpose.

If the battery is ok, you need to check charging output while running. A 12v battery rest around 12.5-12.8v. While the motor is running it should read around 13.8-14.4v this is the charging voltage.

These 2 test will get you pointed it the right direction.
