long story short.

neighbor said he had mercury 25hp that flipped in salt water.sat for awhile and locked up.said he threw it away.

i said, man dont throw an outboard away!

couple days later i go over and he says remeber that outboard i was telling you about?i guess i didnt throw it away.it was in my boat in storage.

so he had brought it home.

he said im pretty sure its rusted out.see what you can do with it.

i think its a 90`s model.

so i tear it completely apart(broke my flywheel puller getting it off.
also broke a head bolt because all the bolts where stiff.

every thing looked good but the crank shaft.MIGHT be able to reuse the crank but definitely needs new bearings.

i really want to get it from him but when i ask about buying it now he just wants to fix it now that he knows i can.he was like, make me an offer i cant refuse.

i guess my question is,what is it worth in this condition and what would be the neighborly price to fix it if i cant buy it from him.

it also needs carb cleand, water pump and the whole nine yards.

Re: need advice

you will spend way more than it's worth and in the end the saltwater will bite you in the *** again .

Re: need advice

staying on good terms with friends/neighbors is very important. Charge him what ever the going rate to rebuild a boat motor is and let him know that there are other boat mechanics in the same area that will do it for the same price, and provide a warranty, maybe even suggest one. too many 25 hp motors out there to worry about this one...this neighbor sounds like he is never happy with any decision he makes and will pretty much blame you for influencing him no matter what you do, best to back on out of that one. Just my thoughts on the very little info I have to go on.

Re: need advice

Not worth anything now.....in the manual it even says if it's submerged in salt water to pretty much throw it away. On the other hand though, if you lived near Charleston SC I would love to have another doner motor!
