I just bought a 20 foot ski boat and need to know about how heavy and what style will work best for lakes with mostly muddy bottoms.

If it's just for casual use in a lake a heavy block with a float and" mooring " rope is what local yokels use with their ski boats,

someone just walks out to the boat and brings it into the bank when needed, in summer naturally, which it ain't here atm

no one really uses an anchor for that

Mud sand rock different anchors perform better in each one length of chain can reduce the amount of weight and rope you’ll need. 20 foot boat in high winds and current 50 pounds might not even hold well while 7 to 10 pounds might hold you fine in low current and wind. If you can. Use more chain and less anchor its less likely to snag thinner rope holds better but is harder to pull. But I deal with quite a bit of anchor so i run a fat rope on the boat I anchor most with easier on the hands I’d have three anchors one chain and rope.

5 kg Bruce and 30ft of chain. Then as much rope as you like. Solid.

It really depends a lot on where you’ll be anchoring and for how long. For example, if you’re just planning to beach and want something to hold the stern in place while you relax and have lunch, you won’t need as much anchor as if you plan to overnight on the boat where wind and current might be a factor.

When we anchor on the muddy Mississippi where the current can be substantial, we use a slip ring shank Danforth anchor with 15’ of heavy chain and a long rode. When we are on our lake in Ontario with a rocky bottom, where we just want to keep our boat from drifting in the breeze, we use a 25lb. rubber-coated Navy anchor with no chain.

With muddy bottoms id do a danforth style with at least 10 ft of chain 3/8. 20 ft is possible. In 30 ft of water i would lay out at least another 20 ft of rope. Id out out 30 to 40 ft to sleep or leave unattended. Double to triple that in winds above 10 knots or any kind of noticable current. My smallest boat is a 23 ft cabin cruiser. The the other a 26 ft sailboat so we weekend regularly and dont like to drift while sleeping. We use 18 to 22 lbs danforth style on muddy bottoms. Also run them break away style because our lake used to be forrests/farms/etc so plenty to cach on. Divers cost about 100 bucks to retrieve. On your boat id still run an 18 ponder if you can store it. Nothing is as scary as going to where your boat was to find its drug anchor and drifted.
