ok so im headed back to my boats storage location to do a little work. i need to know if i have to pull the outdrive in order to pull the motor? i need to re hone the motor and replace piston rings due to rust. so i need to pull it. btw the rest of the motor has been takin apart so its just the block with the pistons and cam attached to the fly wheel and i assume that it connects to the outdrive but idk how it all breaks down since this is my first IO. thanks in advance.

o ya its a older mercruiser 120 4 cylinder.

I'm not 100% sure that you would have to yank the stern drive off to remove the engine, but it will have to come off the re-align the coupler when you put the engine back in. Might as well pull it now so you can check the bellows and the u-joints.

Yes the drive has to come off. The yoke is in the coupler a good 2" and needs to be removed to lift the engine up.

As as stated above to check the alignment when you get it back in.

Make sure to put the gear lever in forward before removing drive.

What he said!!! Once the drive is pulled the engine should come right out. Once you remove the mounting bolts of course.

BTW picts of the engine and rebuild are appreciated.

As to removing the drive its six nuts and make sure it is in forward gear...

Actually, it's eight nuts. Most people find it much easier to remove the drive if the hydraulic cylinders are not on it .....
