I cannot find a charger for a Uniden Sea Hawk 98. I have had this unit for 20+ years, used it as a backup to my base unit when I was cruising. I know the radio works because I have a cable that I can plug into a cigarette lighter. The charger I need is An AD-978. I have called Uniden and that part is obsolete. I have a collection of chargers but none are even close to the required AC input of 60Hz 5W and 12 VDC 150maA output. I have been watching Kijiji and ebay for a year to no avail.
I know portables a re not expensive and better than this 20 year old unit and I have sentimental reasons for keeping it. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Does the battery charge when using the cig light cord? Many do operate the radio and charge the battery. The radio only has one power plug, so either the lighter cord or charger will charge the battery.

It's possible you don't need a charger, but after 20 years the battery itself may be suspect.

Forgot to mention that any charger with the proper plug and DC voltage/current output will work.

I agree with GA.
If the AC adapter and the cigarette lighter adapter both plug into that port on the lower right then either method should charge the battery, IF the 20 year old battery is still good.
You might be able to replace the battery yourself.

I should have mentioned, if you disconnect the battery you can hook up the radio directly to 12V via an adapter cable.
The battery has been replaced and was alright when I "misplaced" the charger. I do have chargers with the same plug
(center positive) but not with the same specs. Thanks Guys,

The specs just need to be close. A 12 volt charger is a 12 volt charger.

What are are the ratings on the chargers you have with the right plug?

Just because the OUTPUT current does not match the original spec does not mean the charger cannot be used. The battery will suck up as much juice as it needs. The charger does not FORCE an unlimited amount of current into the battery. You can buy a multi voltage, multi plug unit at WalMart for about $13.00. Select the output voltage you need (12 volts) and plug it in.

Thanks Guys,
I obtained a charger with compatible specs but the batteries would not hold a charge.
I ordered new batteries from Interstate, Pennsylvania and installed them yesterday.
Charged the battery last night turned the radio on this morning and it just died after 14.5 hours.

Running a down a battery dead will shorten it's life. Don't do that. Were you expecting more than 14.5 hours of use?
