I've finally got to the point where I could start my engine on my build, so I got some gas and hooked up the muffs a crossed my fingers..(88or89 mariner 75)... It hasn't been started in over a year but be alive it or not it cranked on the 3rd or 4th try. It ran good and was pumping plenty of water, then it started idling really high and I couldn't figure it out so I killed it... I've let it set and try again for it to just start off high idling so i need some advise. I've got a new to me fuel tank and also new to me controls if that matters...thanks

Probably running lean due to dirty carbs. Very bad for the motor. If you don't want to burn it up strip, clean and rebuild the carbs. A lean fuel supply for any reason can make the motor run lean and over rev. Eventually the motor will shut down due to lack of fuel.

You must always do a complete and proper job on carbs. Removal, stripping and thorough cleaning. invest in a gallon can of Gunk carb and parts cleaner. Soak all parts for at least 30 mins. Carefully poke all orifices with thin steel wire. Do not try to force the wire into holes that are too tight. Soak one more time and rinse with clean water. Blow dry with compressed air and shoot all orifices with spray carb cleaner. See that the cleaner goes right through where it should. Dry and rebuild with new kits

Thanks, I've never done anything like this before is this a big undertaking or should I just take it to a professional?

The carbs are fairly easy to clean/rebuild on the motor. Just be sure to do one at a time and mark them as to where they are on the motor to start with. I believe that they will need to go back in the same position as they came from, as they might have different size jetting in them. I know that the Mercs of that vintage do. JMO

Have some plastic containers ready and strip each carb separately. Put the parts from each carb into the containers so as to not mix the parts. Mark the containers so that you can identify the carbs. If you have any mechanical feel you should be able to do this. You can pull up the exploded drawings on numerous sites.
