Need Evinrude steering link

Hi Friends, I'm refurbishing a 16' Blue Finn aluminum bassboat. I found a good price on a 1995 9.9 Evinrude & now I see the steering link isn't the right one from whatever the old engine was. The "Rude" website say I need a 0175455 kit or at least the 0175454 rod. I didn't find anything on "E Bay", any ideas beside just calling the dealer . Would it be a dumb idea to just bend & thread a piece of steel rod? Is ther enough pressure/torque on a little 9.9 to make me wish I would have increased my life insurance before starting to fabricate a homemade part?
