Need guys who know about 3 cyl. OMC's

I have a motor that was a 1971 60 hp that has a 1972 65 hp Powerhead on it. I really need a new powerhead and was wondering if I got a used 3 cyl powerhead what years and hp rating would I need to look for and will my CDI ignition which is brand new fit on an older 3 cyl that had the amplifier and stuff? Thanks.

OldJohnson60<br />Hello, The 1972 3 cly year has the better ignition, with out any points distributor B/S. I would look for the same power head 1972 and up. The ignition set up on the 1971 year is different as the fly wheel is deeper and the crank shaft is longer. If you take a fly off of a 1972 year and put on a 1971 the starter will not reach the ring gear as the crank shaft is longer for all the junk that under there. I have 1978 power head on a 1972 mid section with hydro electric shift. Keep the 65 hp carbs on as the exhaust tube is smaller in the 72 year. I tried carbs off a 70 hp and it didn't want to wind out as good because the exhuast outlet is to small.
