If I recall, the shift arm is located on the out side of the engine cover. The shift cable hooks up there. Remove the shift cable from the shift arm and see if the engine shifts correctly by moving the arm by hand. Do not attempt to shift when the engine is not running or at least the fly wheel is turning or you might damage the lower unit internal parts.

If this fixes the problem the malfunction is in the cable connection, cable or shift box at the helm.

If this does not fix the problem, the shift shaft connector may have slipped out.

On the side of the engine "shaft" there is an oval access plate held on with two slotted screws. Inside this cover is a union that connects the upper shift shaft to the lower shift shaft. If this coupling is loose or is about to fall off, it can cause shifting problems.

If it is jumping out of forward gear, you are really destined for a new forward gear and clutch dog. However there is an adjustemet on the shift lever. There are two slotted screws that lock the shift lever to the shaft. If you look underneath the shift lever you will see a roller on the lever that rides on a notched arm. Remove the spark plug wires for safety. Move the arm away from the roller, move the shift lever to forward, rotate the prop shaft to get full gear engagement, and see where the roller is in relation to the notches on the arm. If the roller can move further than the arm will let it, loosen the two screws and adjust the lever so the lever pulls the shaft further twords forward gear. If it dosen't help, replace the parts.
