NEED HELP 1982 80hp Merc Carbs.

I need someone to tell me the proper way to adjust the carbs on an 80hp Merc outboard. Runs good just can't get it to idle in gear. Seems to be too lean when in forward or reverse at idle. (idels great in neutral)
I put up with the problem all last year but it's time to FIX IT !!!

pretty sure there is no adjustment on the carbs except idle speed some really older stuff had it but my 88 classic fifty doesn't i would suspect it's time to rebuild the carbs - not hard to do . kits are about 50 bucks from dealer - might as well do the fuel pump too but your carb kits might also have the pump kit with it .

There should be idle mixture adjustment screws, but no high speed mixture adjustment, as the carbs have fixed high speed jets. Carbs are supposed to be adjusted with the boat in the water idleing in gear. A two person task.

OK folks, thanks for the input. I will give this a try.....maybe.......if I can find someone to drive while I adjust. (preferrably a pretty young lady) The carbs do have idle mixture and fixed main jets. I have only tried to adjust at dock and guess at it. Got tired of messing with it last year and just ran it, used trolling motor to dock....Lazy eh ???? Yup !
