i have three question actually.......

1) i just redid the water pump impeller and now upon restarting in a tub of water it aint shooting water out of the two holes in the rear of the engine really just getting light steam. is there any way to prime the pump. my muffs dont work that well

2) the splitline from the engine to the lower halft is leaking what looks to be oil. i changed the lower end lube when i did the water pump impeller. could that be residual oil and one of the seals leaking.

3) i have the motor cover off and also the carb covers i see a lot of fuel leaking from the throats of the both carbs but mainly the lower one running or not. what could the be from.

thanks for all your help its thursday night and im trying to get on the water saturday morning any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Are you sure that the woodruff key did not come out of the slot while you were installing the new impeller? That key locks the impeller to the shaft and if displaced, the impeller will not turn. If you are sure, then run the pressure very high on the muffs. You need water squirting out around the muffs freely to prime these engines--and even then it's tough. Squeeze the muffs to be sure they are on very tight.

2. Could be oil, could be fuel. smell it. lower unit lube has a very distinctive odor. Once you smell it, you never forget it. You say your carbs are leaking so that leads me to suspect it is gas/oil mix.

3. You need to disassemble and clean the carbs. Either the floats are stuck, the inlet needles are stuck, the seats are worn, or all three conditions exist. This causes the carbs to overfill while running. After you shut down the engine, residual pressure in the system puts a little more gas into the carb bowls, the remaining fuel heats up from residual engine heat and expands, percolating over into the carb.

Thanks Frank Just A Quick Question Though Just To Make Sure Im Putting The Muffs On Right The Go Over The Slots In The Bottom Of The Lower Unit Right Right Infront Of The Propeller

Also Why Would The "oil Stuff" Leak Out Of That Splitline Would The Seals Need To Be Replaced? And Which Ones In Particular

Yes, they go over the slots on the lower unit torpedo right in front of the prop.

If you are talking about the split line between the lower unit and the mid leg, just above the fill and vent plugs, there are no seals or gaskets. The two machined surfaces just mate tigether. If they are not perfect, or a little corroded, there can be seepage of any liquid that travels down the leg.

If you are talking about the rear shroud on the midleg, (The part with the holes in the back to exit cooling water), This has a rubber seal kind of like an automobile window seal. It is glued to the leg and is difficult to replace. It isn't really a seal. It really doesn't do much except quiet down the engine noise.

yeah it from the lower unit and the midleg between the 6 bolts you take off for the lower unit.

is there a set of muffs that you recommend for the force outboard. also i looked up a carb rebuild kit is that 45 dollar price for one carb or two do you know

I don't know about the price. I never bought a rebuild kit. Basically, I just clean them out. If I need a part, I have so many carbs, that I just take good parts of the ones I am not going to use.

As far as muffs, I use the cheapest ones I can find: Heavy wire loop holding two round rubber muffs--about 10 bucks. Actually, I inherited them with boats I picked-up.They work for me.
