(should read will NOT run at idle). I just tried starting my outboard today after a full year of sitting up(it was winterized). When I finally got it started it would not start unless the manual choke was pulled and had some throttle, it would not idle however....it always needed some throttle. Everytime I tried to push the choke back in it would cut off. I used some valvtec and some carb cleaner and let it run for a bit with the choke and still, it would not run unless the choke was out with some throttle. It will not start up at all with the choke in, whether it has throttle or not....it would just spit a couple times and cut off. Any suggestions? I did not have this trouble last year...that said it never sat for over 6 months without use either. This is also the first year I winterized it since I was deployed for a year. It's a Yamaha by the way.

You say it sat for 1 year and then never over 6 months.

Anyway you look at it if it will not start run without the choke and throttle open some then you need to pull and clean the carbs

yeah, prior to last year it never sat more than 6 months. i got deployed last year and it sat for an entire year. i winterized it prior to leaving. how much does it normally cost to have someone clean the carbs? I know i've used quite a bit of yamaha carb cleaner....i dont' guess that gets where it needs to to remedy this issue? i could probably do it myself but it is still under warranty so i don't want to screw something up....not to mention i do not have time to do it.

Still under warranty! Did not realize it was new since you did not post model# or year on manufacture.
I would take to dealer or at least talk to them and explain you situation and ask what the cost would be.
Could be they would do you a good deal, but you will not know untill you try
