Need Help!! 75"50hp Johnson Engine Trouble

Took my boat out for the first time yesterday and encounterd trouble. The motor hasn't run for about a year and when i started it out yesterday it started cold but after a few minutes it ran fine and started up on every key turn. But when i pushed it go go a little faster the engine sounded like it was going faster but it seemed like we werent going any faster. It didnt seem too bad but after taking it on a ride for more then a mile and a quarter and then it just died out.We waited a few minutes and then tried starting it again and again and then it finaly starte ran for maybe like 10 mins then just complety died out. When i tried to start it i got it started adjusted the trhottle and when i got out of neatral it just died out and would start again. The battery died from trying to start it so many times so i know i got to charge it up but i dont know why it would run fine for a while then die.Is there any type of filters that are clogged? or a tune up should be done?Or am i doint something wrong with the choke and the trottle when i start it?I would appreciate any help, info,or suggestions. Thanks Allot!!

Phil V

Phil....setting for a year, it's probably got gummed up in the carbs. The gas flowing thru the bowls may have kicked the gum lose and plugged the jets.

Here's a thing to try. Put some premix fuel in a spray bottle. Take the carb cover off. Try starting the engine. If it don't start or has a hard time, spray some premix down the carb throats. If she fires and runs, do a carb cleaning and overhaul.

I would also check the spark on each cylinder. The should jump at least a 7/16" gap with a hot thick spark.

And don't forget to take a gander at the fuel lines. They may be getting hard and losing their grip on connection points.

Keep us posted as to what you find and don't hesitate to post any questions...thanks!!

My 1969 55 hp did the same thing when I got it. Turned out to be a lot of gunk in the carbs cleaned them and it ran much better. good luck

Re: Need Help!! 75"50hp Johnson Engine Trouble

I found out what i think the big part of what the problem was.On my gas tank i didnt have the vent open whiched created a suction that didnt allow gas to go into the engine.I noticed this while i was messing with it after i got home i opened it up and it made this big gassping sound. Then i tried starting it up with muffs on it and it started up fine but i think a good carb cleaing, and a change of spark plug and wires is needed. Thanks For Your Help and suggestions and will keep you guys updated.

Thanks Again!

Phil V
