I have a 115hp mercury outboard motor. I lost number 3 cylinder. I tore the engine apart and cleaned the cylinder and replaced the number 3 piston. Everything else is in A-1 shape in the bottom end. Lost #3 piston due to cut vacuum line on that cylinder. I don't know the year but the serial number is 7003976. Could someone please tell me the year of this engine? I do not have a manual and I can't get one soon enough. I know I've asked this question a number of times but could someone please email me the steps to time this engine? Or if someone has a manual please scan the steps out of the manual and email them to me. aaabiron@sympatico.ca If it helps, this engine has a straight six with the distributor. Thank you, it is really appreciated.
P.S. In a real bind, can't find a manual fast enough that's why I need the information. I will order one though.

Runningbear

Just a thought:

Tearing it apart and replacing pistons without having a manual or even knowing the year.... :(

Ordering a manual at this stage sounds like doing things in opposite order.

Re: NEED HELP BADLY

I think you will find it's a Canadian ser no and a lot earlier than 1985 more like 1976.
This chart doesn't cover OS models
http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/techhelp/images/TECH158.gif
Is it a blue band or a brown band and is it an 1150 or 115 ? If it has a distributer it's most likely before 1978.
The sites that they refer you onto here for ser no's are for USA
Canada 7
Europe 9
Australia 8
USA 3,4,5,6 B AND A
http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/images/MERMAR/74962/43.gif
I have a manual covering these, but I don't want to make any enemies on here (Especially JB  )
I'll see what I can find

I just replaced the powerhead on my 1974 1150, and the timing (syncronization between spark and fuel delivery) was like 20 steps. Wait for the manual and do it right. The manuals say to set wot timing at 23 degrees but all the gurus say to now set it at 21 degrees to prevent detonation and another new piston.

Unicorn, you will never make an enemy here by correcting or clarifying what someone has said, well maybe if it refers to politics.
