I have recently purchased a 87 Baja 240 sport with a 454 magnum A-1. While I was changing the outdrive gear oil, I noticed one of the rubber boots had a big rip in it. :( I know there are a couple "boots on the Mercruiser, so can anyone tell me how much $ it will cost and time to do it myself? Better yet if ya got time, what I need to do? Thanks so much all help is appreciated!

what I need to do?
you need to get a oem service manual. check this link out.... looks like ya need 9 and 6. confirm proper book by serial number. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=251571

alpha1 has 3 bellows. main bellows around the drive shaft. shift cable bellows. and exhaust bellows. if the exhaust bellows has a rip. it makes no difference for the most part. the other two will need investigation if their ripped.... either main or shift cable bellows can let water into your boat. possibly sinking you....

find out what yer issue is before finding out how much, and if you can....

the lower bellows is the exhust bellows and easiest to see. above that is the larger main bellows. shift cable is the little one.

read the service manuals. they have the facts and pictures in them. procedures, special tools necessary. lateeda....

maybe the mods will move this for ya. it should be over in the mercruiser i/o forum for best exposer.... many real good folks over there with far better ideas than mine....

I agree that a damaged exhaust boot is no problem, but if it has deteriorated to the point of splitting, then the other two won't be far behind.

The manuals will be invaluable, but if you have questions(and you will) include as much information as possible. Pics can also help in some situations.
