Need help deciding what outboard to buy.

Hello. I just got rid of my 1972 evinrude 50 hp outboard based on how prone to failure and expensive to repair it was. Also, I needed a larger motor. I've seen various models listed for sale at reasonable prices but I have decided to find a particular model that would fit my needs and work towards that. I know that I want it to be an OMC motor. What I need is help deciding what outboard would be best for me, based on the following factors:

100-130hp
2-stroke
Reliability, simplicity, ease of repair
Price and availability of parts
Mechanical shift
ability to hold up in occasional saltwater use preferred
built in or optional tilt/trim preferred
electric start
ability to add an alternator or charging system (not required but preferred)

Basically I want a highly available, common, reliable, and valuable outboard that will last and would be worth putting money into should the need arise. I do know definitely that I want to avoid any electric or hydro-electric shift models. I guess I should also mention that the boat it is going on is a V-hull fiberglass boat that's going to be used for both fishing and wakeboarding (although I may at some point want to swap it onto my pontoon boat)

What HP is your boat rated for? You are talking about more than doubling your hp. That might be a bad idea.

Assuming your boat is rated for the power....tough to go wrong with a 1978 or newer JohnnyRude V4.

Tell us about the hull.I very much favor the 3 cyl.looper engines.Very dependable, lots of avail parts, new and used.I had a couple 1990 -2 engines. The 60-70 hp's.they can have trim and tilt, lighter than the v-4's (which in earlier yrs are crossflows)crossflows are great engines, especially the 85 to 115,BUT,loop charged tends to be more fuel efficient and again the weight.MY OPINION

The boat is a v-hull fiberglass walk-through windshield type boat. Its supposed to be able to handle up to 130hp

if the plate says 130, then 90hp would be absolute minimum.

as said any healthy 1978 plus Johnson Evinrude, but if it has the VRO,VRO2 fuel pump. i would convert it to premix.

i have a great running 1977 Evinrude 140 on my pontoon.
