I have been searching for a first boat for about 3 months. Lots of driving, talking, reading, test driving. I am down to two. Both are early 90s. One is a Caravelle Royale 2350 the other a Larson Hampton 220. Both 5.7L and equal in all other regards as far as options. Price is same as well. Engine hours on the L are 900 the C has 520. The big difference is that the Caravelle is an immaculate one owner, the Larson has been through hands and shows it in terms of less care. I estimate it would take $1500 to get the Larson in same shape as the Caravelle. I like the Larson a bit better. The seating arrangement is better and it feels more spacious probably because of the 8'6" versus 8' beam. But the condition level of the Caravelle is truly impressive. It needs nothing to become my boat. The Larson needs exterior detailing, minor gelcoat repair, replace leaking exhaust manifolds, new batteries, replace cracked hatch cover, and missing anchor box cover as well as general cleaning. So how much should I weigh condition and indication of care? That and better layout of the Larson seem to be having the most impact on my decision. Thanks folks!

BTW, both outdrives are Merc. The Larson's is new (not rebuild).

Caravelle. Based on your description of the 2 boats, you should not even need to ask.

Condition and previous care mean everything! From experience, if you've found that many problems up front in the Larson, there are more troubles lurking in the shadows. If it were me, I'd adjust to the layout and go for the well maintained boat without question. That's just me...

With my opinion, it's unanimous for the Caravelle so far, especially if you want to go boating in the near future.;)

Thanks all. Took the C for a ride. Weird experience. Very clean presentation but several concerns on the ride. First on throttle up it bogged like wnated to stall but then caught and ran. But just after plane it felt like it slowly leaned left and would not respond to steering correction. That was kinda scary. Put owner back in seat to adjust trim which improved things but not completely. Handling was strange. But then at WOT I noticed tach at 5800 with speed about 44. Not right. Returned to ramp disappointed. Had cash dep in pocket. Lesson learned - looks can be deceiving... the search goes on...

Interestingly I took L for a ride too. No issues. Smooth and strong with all guages reading fine. Not sure what to do. Tried owner on price adjust but no go. I still like the L layout. Probably look for one in better overall. Will keep looking 4 now...
