I am currently negotiating between three seperate people on three seperate used outboards for my whaler, I have no idea which one to pick, what is the best deal, I honestly have no idea what i'm doing, I will describe each outboard, put the price and you tell me what is the best bang for the buck, PLEASE bare with me!

1) 1986 Yamaha 90hp- $1200 Good thing about this engine is that is comes off the same boat I have and all cables will fit, seller is also willing to include everything with this engine- controls, batterys, guages and cables, motor just recently had a new spline put in ($1500) has great compression and runs good, has tilt/trim and seems like a good engine, I think the recent mechanical needs ran the price up on this, I heard they have corrosion problems but other than that great engine.

2) 1986 Evinrude 70hp- $500 Motor does not include controls and is in bad cosmetic condition, engine has compression of I think 85 on all cylinders and has carburator issues, he said two carbs have cracked emulsion tubes which causes it to run ruff but he just used it anyway, lots of replaced parts include starter has been
rebuilt, trim motor rebuilt, all fuel lines replaced and fuel pump rebuilt the lower unit resealed about 5 years ago, vro was taken out

3) 1988 Evinrude 70hp $800- engine looks great, seller says it has a clogged carburator, he claimed that when running fast once in a while you have to hit the choke to keep it going, engine was used in freshwater for first part of it's life, compression is great, engine comes with controls

I am leaning torward #3 but I need some help fast, these sellers are getting edgy

Personally, I'd go #1

Reasons:

1. Good engine with a lot of grunt.
2. More horsepower is something you will always be looking for.
3. All the bits are there already to hook up.
4. Once you've had tilt and trim you'll wonder why all engines don't have it!

Number three has tilt and trim also, and $400 cheaper but it doesn't come with all those extra cables and has 20 less hp. Do the rest of you think number one is the best way to go? The yamaha does show some cosmetic corrosion but the spline was just replaced so that is one thing I won't have to worry about, I need some more opinions, I plan on closing one of these deals today, the only thing with number three is carburator issues, but I like this engine because it was used in freshwater most of it's life but my neighbor has the same yamaha and it still ticks

Re: NEED HELP! Engine purchase driving me crazy

I just spend the last hour looking through the site and I found more issues with the older evinrude 70hp than the older yamaha 90hp, not only that, but I found this-

"Ken.... Fouled carburetors, and runing a engine on same, are the major cause of engine powerhead failure. The fixed high speed jets become somewhat clogged with the result being that the proper fuel mixture can not be delivered at the higher rpms.

This results in improper lubrication, leading to piston failure, snapped/broken piston rings, scored cylinder walls, etc etc.

And yes, one carburetor could have been fouled moreso that the others which would account for the one piston failing. However, upon rebuilding clean, rebuild and restore all carburetors to their factory specifications."

since Engine number three seems to have carb problems at high speeds and has been run that way, I guess I should steer clear of it because it might have resulted in degrading the powerhead?

I'd tend to go with #3. It's freshwater and OMC 70s are one of the most bullet proof engines made. Parts are everywhere. There are 10000X more OMC 70s than Yamahas 90s made, that's why problem posts number higher. Have a mech check out whatever motor you buy.

the japanese motors are superior to others
go for the yamaha.
my buddy ran a CV85 for 12 years without a
hint of trouble.
no corrosion problems i am aware of.
if you are running in slat water, flush with each use.
should give you lots more hours !

I am real weary of anthing a seller says. Remember his objective is to sell you stuff.

There are a lot of posts here on iboats where a guy writes in about his blown-up moter and somewhere along the line he will write "The seller told me that all it needed was a tune-up. - - - ."

Re: NEED HELP! Engine purchase driving me crazy

Yamaha was a scam, seller didn't give me ANY contact info and expected me to send the money over first, wouldn't even answer my simple questions about the ouboard, compleately ignored them. Wouldn't even say if it was kept on a trailered boat or one in the water, couldn't even give me a phone number!

I am going to check out engine number 3 and hopefully buy her, talked to him on the phone, said engine was in freshwater all her life until recent, runs like a champ! Looks pretty good also, I don't think it is a high hour motor, only problem is clogged carbs that cause it to die at highspeeds unless you give it a little choke every now and then, comes with everything, battery, gas tank, controls, prop, and a doel fin. Motor also has tilt and trim also, and I think it is a good price at $750, and it is 2 years newer than the yamaha, it an 88, anyway I will tell ya how it goes on saturday

What Whaler do you have? I have a 17.5 Mauntauk with an 89 88 SPL. This boat simply flies with my motor, and it is very responsive. The 70hp is a great motor too, and it is a lighter that the V4's I would be interested in hearing how the performance compares to mine in case I ever need to make a change.

Re: NEED HELP! Engine purchase driving me crazy

I actually have a 16ft 7in whaler, it's a 1966, I think it is a little lighter than yours. I was told between a 90 and a 70 you get two extra mph on this hull, but probably because once the hull reaches a certain speed it is hard to get it to go any faster, especially in any chop. The difference is if I take three guys fishing the 90 would start making a big difference. Hopefully the 70 works out fine, I will keep you informed. I was on a 16ft 7 with three guys and a 48hp johnson and it got up on plane no problem, pushed us along at I would say 25mph-30mph

Re: NEED HELP! Engine purchase driving me crazy

Be very careful of Yamahas made before 1994 that are used in saltwater. The earlier metal would corrode very easily, usually from the inside out and waterleaks would occur without any notice. Also they used steel parts in the shift linkage that would rust away. '94 and later motors had stainless steel shifting shafts.

Freshwater motors were OK.
