I picked up an Evinrude last night. The idiot ran it on a broken impellor. It was probably a mistake to buy it, but it was very inexpensive. I've been fixing a handful of them, and I thought it would be worth the parts or a rebuild, if necessary.
Alright. This motor does not have a nameplate. Some idiot broke it or removed it or some such thing. I need to buy an impellor for it today, so I wanted to try to positively identify it here. I'll give you what I can remember from the short time I worked on it last night.
It's a 9.5 sportwin. White cover and blue motor. Shortshaft, if that makes a difference. The carbeurator is on the aft stbd. side. The gearshift handle shifts by moving it up or down. It's shifted from the forward stbd side of the motor. Very smoothly, I might add. The waterpump has 4 screws in it, vise the 3 I had in the older 18 hp fastwin. To remove the lower unit, I had to loosen the bolts for it and drop the unit an inch or two. The screw that holds the shifter shaft(sorry for poor terminology) in place was just inside, and exposed when I lowered the unit by that first few inches.
I'm sorry I can't post pics. This is my work address, and I don't have a computer at home anymore. I should learn to fix computers-more money in it-at any rate, I can't download pictures from work, so I'm stuck with what I have. Can anyone help me with what this motor is, and what the compression should be? I checked it and had 55 on each cylinder. I'm pretty sure that's bad, but I'm still learning. As always, your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Need help identifying evinrude w/o nameplate

Hi,

Well; I'm no expert...but it seems that the 1964-1973 Evinrudes were the same in that respect anyway...

They use impeller # 18-3003 from Sierra. Should cost you about $15.00.

If you can get the serial number from one of the seal plugs on the block...you can probably back-track to the exact model year and model # that way. Would probably help when you search for more esoteric parts...

Hope this helps, Chuck

Chuck, I appreciate the answer. That definitely helps me get started with it. Anyone with any ideas on what the compression should be? I haven't rebuilt a motor yet, but there's a first time for everything.

It should be up over 55, preferably over 100. Try some seafoam type decarb dumped in each cylinder. It's a long-shot, but often on these older J/E you see stuck rings due to coke build-up. If there's been a history of overheating, it could also be a blown head gasket.

Check the convex welsh plug on the top of the block for a serial number. With the number of serial numbers reported here, we can often pin down the year with it.

Re: Need help identifying evinrude w/o nameplate

I tried to be proactive last night, so I took the motor down to the dealership. Other than telling me that it was probably stolen at some point in the past, which I'll buy into, we checked numbers on freezeplugs, and so forth. Nothing. The freezeplug numbers didn't match up with the manual, for whatever reason.
I worked on it some yesterday, also. I dropped the lower unit and changed the impellor. At least it was crystal clear why the last idiot was overheating(They should require a license to run an outboard, so they can at least keep tabs on the idiots). The motor started right up, as well. It runs fantastically, but is leaking water from the manifold gasket. I ordered that, and changed the head gasket because it was 13 bucks and 20 minutes of work. I figured we'd write it off as preventative maintenance. I didn't check compression, but I will in a few weeks. I'm off to the wide blue ocean! Yippeeee! Thanks for your help.
