Need help identifying mystery outboard motor

Picked this unit up at a garage sale for $15. Seems to have good compression. Found 5hp printed on the flywheel but other than that it's pretty devoid of markings or labels that are legible.

Would appreciate any information anyone provide to assist in the identification of this machine.

Thanks.

I wouldn't swear to it but it looks like a Hiawatha (or one of many air cooled outboards sold at Western Auto or Gambles).

Thanks for the response Lion hunter! Did some googling and looks like the power heads for Hiawatha were made by Tecumseh. The guy I bought it from did say it was a Tecumseh engine.

Thanks again!

Got some more information on the unit by close inspection. It's water cooled and has a Tillotsun AJ16A carburetor.

That clamp bracket and mag lever look like Elgin to me, manufactured by West Bend. Water cooled, single cylinder - it's missing the lower cowl and the recoil starter.

The plate on the front of the clamp bracket should have the model number. If the paint is worn off, look closely and you might still see some embossing of the letters. Model numbers are in the xxx.xxxxx format.

Look up:

There is good info here, plus google Elgin and a ton more will come up. Without the number though, you'll be hard pressed for more info.

Tillotson carbs are common to a variety of manufacturers. Tecumseh made air cooled motors.

Aw come on everybody, that is a Scott-Atwater. Or a Scott built for somebody else such as Firestone. Should be 3.6 horsepower, but might be derated if it is some store brand. Why all the mystery anyway? The data plate is right on the front, between the brackets. Is it worn smooth or something? Give us the numbers and we can tell you exactly what it is.

Re: Need help identifying mystery outboard motor

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

Unfortunately it appears the nameplate has been pretty much sanded smooth for reasons unknown and everything else was painted black. My son thinks we should go "CSI" on the nameplate to see if we can recover any embossing but I think it's a lost cause. Perhaps it was stolen sometime in the past or perhaps just a case of an over aggressive cleaning job.

Thanks again for all the responses. I found a diagram for the carb. If the electrics work work I think we're in business. The only other major concern is the water pump.

See that is why we need F_R to answer all these posts....We just fiddle around guessing until he shows up :). You might try putting a paper over the plate and rubbing a pencil on it to see if anyhting shows up

OK I have a little more information:

Off the name plate: 1750, embossed. The 750 is definite, the 1 is a guess.

Off the intake manifold: 462-1873

Scott was my second guess. 1750 or 750 doesn't show up for Scott or Elgin, so maybe its a serial #. The other # is probably just a manifold part #.

Re: Need help identifying mystery outboard motor

In my heart, I know that is a Scott Atwater motor built for Firestone Tire & Rubber, 3.5 or 3.6hp, late 1950's But I can't find that 1750 documented anywhere. Besides, the "7" would seem to indicate 5hp, according to Scott Custom. But the 5hp is a twin cylinder motor--you have a single. I am beginning to think that the brackets don't belong to that motor. Maybe the flywheel doesn't either, since you say it is marked 5hp. BTW, I happen to own a Scott Firestone, 1946. Picture attached. You can see the similarities. Notice mine has the lower cowlings and recoil starter.

So....you almost have me stumped, but not quite.

I suggest you ask the Scott Guy, Don Webb. http://www.scottatwaterinfo.com/
