Hello,
I have a 1966 John Allmand 23' Cabin Cruiser with a I/O Merc. The steering cable busted through the sleeve and bunches up when you turn the wheel. I obviously need a new cable.

But I am trying to figure out what system I have....I think I have a rotary system. I have removed the cable from the helm (easy) but I am having trouble removing the cable at the transom.

Can anyone check out the pics attached and point me in the right direction? This is my first boat, and first repair job on a boat. I need to know what kind of cable will work without replacing the helm and possibly where I could get one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... Being a 1966,...
I see problems tryin' to replace Any part of that system, without Major Updates, startin' at the transom end...
The helm should be replaced at the same time, they're nearly Free, when bought in a "Kit", compared to the price of Just the cable...
The transom end looks to be the Problem end... That stuff hasn't been used in eons...

Yes it is a rotary system. As stated above you really should replace ALL of your steering. The rotary systems seem to get slop a lot quicker then do the round or square racks. Some are adjustable too. With a boat that size I would not go cheap on a system either.

Just went through this with a 1977 rotary Quicksilver (Merc.) No parts available and the cable was fixed in the helm. I ended up with a new Teleflex system/new wheel - single detachable cable - easy to install.

Ha..I just had to do the same thing. I took the cable down to the marine supply store and they said they have never seen this type of cable..they found a new threaded tube that would fit into the transom mount and would connect with the new style Teleflex.

They also gave me an adapter for the helm...didn't have to or want to replace helm (gears were in great shape)

Have not installed it yet, I hope it is relatively easy like you say.
