I have recently inherited an inboard outdrive and do not have a manual to go along with the engine and outdrive. The outdrive is a Mercruiser and the serial number begins with a 401***, not sure what the last numbers are. I wanted to identify the engine type, year model and horsepower rating. I am pretty sure that it is a Ford small block, probably a 302(distributor located on the front right side) but not sure whether it is the 888, 225, 225s ....

Can anyone point me in the right direction, I am looking to get some parts and plugs to get it ready for the summer???

What kind of boat is it and what year? Look at the outdrive and find the tag, post the number. That will help.

IF it's a small block Ford,
It Should be mated to a Mod.1 Outdrive, which is Also called the "R" drive, or Pre-Alpha......
It's a Good Solid Drive System.... It can handle 275hp All day, or 300hp if your Careful.... It can also be up-graded to Alpha1 Very Easily.....

Fords were used from 1970 till 1976....
And the Exception on the Drive would be the TR drives.... They just Look Different......

Re: Need help identifying the engine?????

The boat is a 1974 22' SportCraft, the "Sportsman" series. The tag on the outdrive has the serial number 4013860. I have also found another lower unit that may have been replaced by the 4013860 and it has a serial number 4196545. I have done some research on the merc website and I think that this motor is the 888, not 100% sure. If any of you pros know for sure that would be great!

Thanks for posting.

That link isn't going to help.... that's for Chevy motors...
He's got a Ford......

kwoolard.
You've got a 1974, small block Ford, in front of a Mod.1 outdrive.......
All those #s don't mean much around here.....
There weren't many Variations, or Options, OR Changes in these.......

Just What, Exactly is your Question ???
