Need help ID'ing my outboard

Hi! First post. Got a 13' whaler with a US marine engine. The model number sticker took some damage, so the model number is _ _ 7X8C and the serial number is 3109.

Top says 'US marine' and 40 hp. Searching for a model number online, the closes match is 507X8C, but that corresponds to a 1988 force 50 hp. But the top of the outboard says 'us marine' and also say '40hp'...any ideas on how I may ID it?

Looks like the only one with that model # is the one you found - 88 50hp. Previous owner may have changed the cowl.
