Hey everyone. Im pretty versed in auto repair.. but clueless about boat repair and need a little info. I purchased a 88 Sunbird Corsair last year from a friend. It is a 4.3L OMC Cobra. The condition was this:

The engine was seized and full of salt water.

My friend said he and his father were in New Haven harbor and the engine stopped. The motor took on water and someone told him it was due to leaky bellows. Anyhow. I purchased a new rebuilt long block for the vessel and was wondering if anyone could tell me what other gaskets / bellows / parts I should think about replacing as well to make sure the same thing doesnt happen to the new motor. The exhaust manifolds are pretty scaily inside. Could water have come in thru the manifolds? They are the one piece manifolds and are quite expensive to replace (so id rather not if i dont have to).

ANY AND ALL INFORMATION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

THANKS!

You could probably have them cleaned and pressure tested to see if you need new ones. i don't know who could do it. Probably a machine shop.

There is a very good chance the water got into the cylinders because of defective manifolds, risers, or both. I would NEVER trust old risers and manifolds on a new engine. That's just asking for trouble.

I took the manifolds to my local machine shop.. he told me he wouldnt test them, and he would as you agreed never put used manifolds on a new motor. Is there anything else that could have caused water to get into the cylinders / oil pan? Im definately going to buy new risors (the exaust manifolds and intake risors are actually one casted piece on my 4.3L model), but I want to replace anything else that could have caused this problem in the first place. Could the bellows have been the reason for the water in the engine? Thanks for the info guys!
