Hey all,
I recently picked up a 1957 sea king "gg8960a". I've started tearing it down for a rebuild. The carb is completely gummed a varnished up. I am looking for a complete carb kit, including the float. Also, I need to know how to set the high speed and low speed adjustments. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Re: Need help locating carb kit

The 1957 Sea King (I think that was a Wards or Sears model) would normally be a test bed for the Evinrude/Johnson 1958 model..... sometimes not but usually. What hp is that engine?

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Re: Need help locating carb kit

The hp rating is 5 hp... I read somewhere that this motor was manufactered by Gale a subsidiary of Johnson ... something like Model 5D-14... ain't really sure... The main this is where can I find a carb kit for this motor. Do I go to a OMC dealer or is it something that I have to special order. Thanks

The 5hp and 5.5hp carburetor kits are all the same from 1954 to 1967. The part number is 439071 and would be available at this site or any Evinrude or Johnson dealership.

Normally I'd suggest purchasing it at this website but in your case, since the kit may be in question (different somewhat), I'd suggest that you have your carburtetor off and dismantled with you at the dealership so as to match the kit components up.

Sounds like a plan to me... I am assuming that the price for this kit will be about the same, give or take a few dollars. Thank you for all your help, and I will probably be back on here again for more advise. This is my first at tearing down a outboard, but being a mechanic for a living I feel relatively at ease taking on this task. I really want this to come out right since I will be using on my vintage 1960 seaking jon boat.
