hello im new to the forum and kinda new to boating. im in the army and have a friend who is willing to sell me his boat he got from a friend. he is selling it to me for 400. not sure on the type of boat but do have pics. i know it has a mercruiser 140 i think. maybe you can tell from the pics. the isssue is that this boat is a project boat and i know it and it will take some $ to get it up and running correctly. i took the boat to a boat dealer to have it looked over. there mech found some issues. the trim/tilt will not go up or down. when you push up it just clicks from the Solenoid. nothing when pushed down. the mechanic says it is the Solenoids. the next issue is the steering. i can turn the wheel full range of motion but it takes both hands and some muscle to do it. the big issue that was found is one of the core plugs had popped out. i assume its from freezing. last time the boat was on the water was last year.

an outer inspection did not show any cracks but evidence that the block had been repaired before. now the mechanic told me its a gamble. there may or may not be internal damage to the engine from freezing. he was able to start the engine for a few seconds and it did run but water shot out of the hole so he shut it off. checked the oil and there is no water in it. he wants to charge 1000 to put in a new plug.kinda feel like he is trying to overcharge me. i have a buddy who is a mechanic in the army and is willing to help me for beer:D so any ideas as to what to do? i found the repair manuals in the adult section but not sure on the one to download. i know the boat is a 82 or 84 model boat. what size plug would i need? also i know there are two Solenoids. what ones would i need/part numbers? i added pics. any help/info would be valuable. Thanks.

Do not buy this one. It will end up costing way more than it is worth. If you really want to end up with a good running fun boat then up your budget some and buy one that is already running and you get to try out on the water. This one will need an engine no doubt, the core plug is your sign. Tilt/Trim issues are also costly. You should be able to find one for $1200-$1500 that is lake ready and has none of those problems. If you do buy this one then I predict that sooner or later (and after throwing many more $ at it than you ever intended) you also will be looking for a friend of a friend to take it on as a project:)

I'm with these guys... You really don't know if this thing is going to need a 3k motor and 1k bucks in trim system work until you get into it....
So why get into it????
for 2k bucks you should be able to get a running boat with little to no issues.
