hey,

I want to permanately mount my fuel tank in the back of the boat. It would be hard to reach to fill it up when i mount it so i am wondering if i can buy some sort of a gas cap and line that will connect to the top of the tank so i can just fill it up like a truck....i know it can happen i just need to know where to find the kit and how to do it. any advice would be great!

thanks!

A filler neck will solve your problem. You will need to determine the type of connection to your particular tank based on material and diameter mainly. then research automobile or truck filler necks to find one you can adapt. some are fixed some are flexible. HTH

Are you wanting to mount a portable tank permanently? If so, you need a permanent mount fuel tank to connect a fuel fill to it. Permanent mount tanks have a 1-1/2" fill neck that connects to fuel fill hose that connects to a fuel fill plate mounted on the hull.

I just replaced a portable tank with a permanent tank in my Capri. Check it out here:

Also did one in my MFG:

The plastic portable tank is not designed to be connected to a fuel fill. Although there are fuel senders that will operate a dash mounted gas gauge for portable tanks, I have not found a conversion/connection for the fill to connect a deck fill plate. Same with a fuel vent.

Also note that it is very dangerous to fill a portable tank inside a boat. This is because the vapors displaced from the tank will sit in the boat, and fuel running into a plastic tank builds static that can spark igniting those fuel vapors. Boom.

I fully understand how inconvenient so called "portable" tanks in the 9 to 12 gallon size are. Who wants to carry a big tank weighing close to 100 lbs and lift it into a boat on a trailer or next to a dock. I used dual 6 gallon portables for 1 year in the MFG before installing a permanent tank. It will run you a few hundred for the tank and supplies, but its easy to do, easy to meet Coast Guard regulations, and can be done in a weekend once you have all the parts together.
