Need help on old Merc 115... a few dumb questions

First thing, where should water be exiting while running? Right now it's only coming out of the six slots above the prop.... This doesn't seem right to me. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but this is the first boat I've ever worked on.

The other thing is, the motor wont shift to reverse, I'm assuming this is a cable adjustment issue, (throttles up but doesn't shift) any guidance on adjusting the shift linkage would be much appreciated

It the motor is 1979 or earlier the serial number will be on a plate rivited on the Motor bracket just under the front of the Power head. The serial numbers on the block should be where the two pieces bolt together. JR

Lucas, Water exiting where you describe is perfectly fine. Actually it is the main water outlet. On the muffs, water may (or may not) come out of the idle relief holes (square holes at the base of the powerhead). It also may come out thru the prop.

If you can find the serial number on the clamp bracket, you can find out the year. If the motor has a distributor, it is pre 1979.

To adjust the shift cable, remove the shift cable barrell nut from its clamp. Push the shift slide ito the neutral position. It will click and stay there, Now set the remote control to neutral. Now adjust the barrell nut to fit the clamp.

Rule # 1

Get a maintenance manual! Don't try to adjust anything ....... until you read the manual.

Rule #2

If you are unsure or the age/condition of the impeller......... change it and do not hesitate to invest in that small life fluid pump for your outboard.

Re: Need help on old Merc 115... a few dumb questions

Thanks for all your guys' help, as far as the model number goes, that's what the guy at the marine shop asked for, but from everything I'm seeing it looks like all I need is the serial number, is this right? My merc is definitely pre-79, I was told 74 (by a failing memory though) is this all the info I need to purchase the correct impeller?

P.S. this is probably the most helpful forum I've ever posted on, thank you all

All the 115's use the same impeller.
