Hi Everyone,

I just bought a 1989 Edson 17.5 bowrider with a 1991 Suzuki DT225 motor on it. It currently has a 24pitch 3 blade prop on it and runs at 56 mph, as I was told. I am actually on my way to drop it in the water and try out right now. Just wonder what other peopel are running with this motor and what props people are using and what gives more speed and all that good stuff.

Re: Need help on Suzuki DT225

Okay, I took it out to the lake and got is started up right away with no problems, a fair amount of smoke. Got in and started out and could only get onto plane twice with great effort. The motor just seemed to not be geting power under load. I played with the trim to try and find a sweet spot. Anyone have any ideas what I may be facing with this motor? I find it hard to believe that a 225hp with a 24p prop would have a hard time getting going.

Could the prop be to big? I only got to around 3000 rpm. I just bought the boat and really need some help.

with a 24p prop on a 225 on a bowrider i see no reason why you shouldn't hit the 75mph mark ..... yes the 24p prop is a speed prop and will take a while to get you up on plane ... the ideal prop for this motor is about 19p ..... but with the 24p set the motor's trim all the way down, till it doesn't move anymore down, then give it full throttle, when up on plane you can trim it out again .....

Tried that it would not plane, more like the motor was under too much load. Only got it to plane twice in 45 minutes of trying. I played with all kinds of different trim settings. Somewhere there is a problem that the motor is not getting full power all the time, or something. Just bought the boat and I am pretty pissed at this point, as the seller said there was nothing wrong with the boat at all. After dropping $9k for a boat that don't plane I am taking it into the only place that will look at a 91 suzuki motor. I really just want to go park myself in front of the sellers front gate and not move till he gives me my money back and takes his heap of troubles.

they are great motors, you'll get it right ..... do you get any warnings on the tach? First try this .... Ask someone to pump the fuel bulb when pushing to get up on plain and borrow a prop (17p) from a prop shop ... and see what happens ....

I was getting the water warning symbol, although water was flowing just fine. It would come and go. I read in the manual that if any alarm goes off that the over revolution system is engaged and to reset it you need to go to neautral for 1 second. I am sure this is why I only got up on plane 3 times. I noticed on one try that I could not get above 3000 rpms. Not sure why the water alarm woulb be going off if the it is spraying out the back and the pee hole.

With any luck the shop will be able to fix it and it won't be too expensive.

3000 rpms is very low prop down to 17 that should get rpms up provided that you dont have ign probs or fuel deliv probs 17 should get you way up in rpm .you may need 19 pitch

hold on benny .... this is not a prop problem .... water flow switch might be bad, or time for a impeller change and check the t-stat .....

Yes I would check the t-stat these suzuki's seem to be known for the warning system problems. Usualy there is a light for left and right sides on the water flow wich side is coming on and check that t-stat if it is not opening you could be getting hot on that side and still see water flow out the pee hole. If one side is getting hot it will sound the warning modual and go into pertection mode.
