Help!! These are driving me crazy.
I have two problems with this motor which I don't think are related. I have worked on the engine some and recently took it to a mechanic who assured me that it was fixed. After this weekend, it is still sick.
1. Engine has a history of hard starting when cold. It seems especially hard to start after it has sat for at least an hour. The choke plates have been checked and work properly. The bulb has been pumped. Compression is good. The mechanic changed the plugs from gapless to gapped. After a good initial cold start this weekend, I had to use starting fluid (yeh, I know it's bad, but when everybody's watching...) when restarting after it has cooled. (It starts first time when warm. Has anyone ever added a second battery (in parallel) to help the starter spin faster?? I have heard that adding an enricher instead of a choke may be a good idea. What do do think?
2. After starting, I ran the boat for about an hour with no problems. It then started to surge up and down (like it runs out of gas). Pushing the throttle down just makes it worse. I ran it the next day (after the hard start) and it ran fine. I siphoned about 2 gallons out of the tank yesterday, so I don't think that there is a restriction or bad pickup. Any ideas...Thanks
